Law, Morality and the Way forward
Thoughts on the role of morality and virtue in the era of ever-increasing regulation
Abstract — In today’s world, as the body of law continuously expands, we should perhaps contemplate what scope is left for the moral tenants, ideals, virtues etc., which man has relied on for support, consolation and guidance in his continuing quest for a better life. The conclusions drawn here are supported with references to the “Old Master” Laozi and his classic text Tao Te Ching: “The Book of the Way and its Virtue”. Standing above both the law and morality are the classic human virtues, which still have an important role to play, because the struggle against wrongdoing, crime and other vices cannot be waged with any real vigor without the support of virtue.
